Things to do in Alexandroupoli
A small city with a lot of character, Alexandroupoli is the perfect destination for those who want to relax by the sea and follow a cultural route. Although it is only an hour away from the Turkish border, this seaside city has a completely different vibe and the things to do in this coastal city are few but concise, simple but enjoyable.
1. Spend Time Around the Lighthouse: This is perhaps the heart of Alexandroupoli: A lighthouse built in 1880 and still standing tall. Located on the coastline, this landmark offers a dreamlike view at sunset. You can stroll along the walking trail around it, sit on the benches and listen to the sound of the waves accompanied by the gentle Aegean breeze.
2. Stroll along Dimokratias Street: Imagine a street in the city: During the day, it's quiet for shopping, and in the evening it's closed to traffic and people dressed in elegant clothes slowly make their rounds. Dimokratias Street is just such a place. As you wander among the cafes, small shops, bookstores and restaurants typical of Greece, the question “We've arrived, but what are we going to do?” gives way to “How peaceful it is here”.
3. Cool off at Makri Beach: If it's summer and you're thinking of going back without a swim, you're missing out. A 15-minute drive from the city center, Makri Village is home to Alexandroupoli's most popular beaches. You can swim in the clear and turquoise waters of Aya Yorgi Beach and have lunch in the surrounding seaside taverns. Peace, nature and a little sun, what more could you want?
4. Take a Time Travel at the Thracian Ethnology Museum: Housed in a neoclassical building in the city center, the Thracian Ethnology Museum is a time capsule. It is possible to discover the traditional lifestyle of Thracian culture through old household items, clothes, handicrafts and photographs. If you want “a little culture on vacation”, put this place on your list.
5. Be a Guest in the World of Birds in the Evros Delta: For those who want to be alone with nature, one of the most special gems of Alexandroupoli is the Evros Delta. This area formed by the Evros River is considered one of the most important wetlands in Europe and is home to about 300 bird species. It is possible to watch birds with binoculars from observation towers, take nature walks and witness an enormous biodiversity. I especially recommend going early in the morning; nature is beautiful when you wake up.
6. Pursue Local Flavors: If you're a fan of Greek cuisine, Alexandroupoli has plenty to please your palate. Seafood is fresh here. Grilled calamari, octopus stew, mussel saganaki and of course appetizers with plenty of olive oil. Especially in small taverns on the beach, it is a completely different experience to taste these flavors accompanied by ouzo in the moonlight.
7. Take a Deep Breath in Dadia Forest: If you're looking for more nature, Dadia Forest, about 1 hour away, is the place for you. One of the most important bird of prey observation areas in Europe, this region especially attracts nature lovers. Eagles, hawks and vultures are among its ancient inhabitants. Listening to the silence, walking along a lush green path, or even exploring the species with a guide at the birdwatching house can be a very pleasant experience.
Alexandroupoli is such a place that you can get into the holiday mood just by wandering the streets without making any plans. It's a seaside town where no one is in a hurry, the sun paints the sky orange and children lick ice cream by the sea. A city without crowds, without noise but with a soul.
