Imagine a place in the middle of the Aegean, far from the crowds, simple yet profound. Patmos Island is just such a place. It doesn't matter if you don't know anything about religion, the island draws you in with its serenity, its nature and the dignified atmosphere of its old stone streets. Everything slows down in a way in Patmos: the time, the walks, the conversations, perhaps that's why a few days spent here stay with you for a long time.

Monasteries and Caves of Patmos

St. John's Monastery: In the center of Patmos, this is the most important building that carries the soul of the island. Built in 1088, the Monastery of St. John looks like a fortress from the outside, but inside there are baroque icons, frescoed walls and wood-carved icon panels. The monastery is still active and religious education continues inside. It can be visited, but tourists are not allowed in the worship areas.

Cave of the Apocalypse (Cave of the Apocalypse): The Cave of Apocalypse, where it is believed that St. John received revelation and wrote the last part of the Gospel, is considered extremely sacred for Christians. The mystical atmosphere of the cave impresses every visitor, whether they are a believer or not. There can be long queues of visitors during the summer season, it is better to go early.

Places to Visit in Patmos

Windmills and Viewpoints: Like almost all Greek islands, Patmos has classic stone windmills. The windmills, which can be reached on foot from Apokalips Cave, are a great stop to watch the island from the top and take a breather. Sitting on a stone bench, feeling the island's breeze and taking a few photos is a must.

Chora (Old Town): Whitewashed cubic houses, turquoise doors and blue shutters, the Chora area of Patmos reflects typical Cycladic architecture. The narrow streets are lined with art galleries, designer boutiques and elegant cafes. Ideal for both architectural and cultural exploration.

Beaches of Patmos

Grikos Beach Grikos is one of the most popular beaches on the island, especially in the area where luxury hotels and beach clubs are located. If you're looking for a beach with plenty of sun loungers, quality service, cold shots all day long, clean showers and gourmet flavors, this is the place for you.

Agriolivado and Kambos: One of the closest beaches to Skala Harbor, Agriolivado is one of the most crowded beaches in summer. Kambos Beach, a little further away, is also preferred by families and young people. There are also options for those who want to do water sports.

Psili Amos Bay: Psili Amos, in the southwest of the island, is a natural wonder. There is no driveway, you can walk down on footpaths. Yes, it is a bit laborious, but in return, a clean, quiet, golden yellow beach awaits you.

Livadi Geranou Livadi Geranou is one of the most beautiful bays not only in Patmos but also in the Aegean, with its fine pebbles, glassy sea and the tiny white church rising on the opposite islet. I highly recommend going at sunset.

Petra and Diakofti Bays:  Petra Beach is a bit challenging with its pebbly structure, but the sea is quite clear. The neighboring Diakofti Bay is a small paradise that preserves its naturalness and stands out with its silence. Having a light lunch at the tavern next to it and watching the sunset would be a great closing.

Where to Eat in Patmos?

Pantelis Taverna: A popular spot for locals as well as regular tourists. Pantelis is a classic Greek restaurant but the menu is very rich. Grilled lamb chops, calamari, moussaka and especially the local delicacy “fouskes” (sea urchin salad) are a must-try. On the main street parallel to the harbor, always crowded.

Arion Café: This classic café, which has been standing for more than 100 years, is a symbol for the people of Patmos. The wood-paneled, high-ceilinged interior has a nostalgic feel. It's peaceful to sit outside and sip your coffee while listening to the waves and people watching. Small snacks and desserts are also on the menu.

Things to know before going to Patmos

Transportation There are no direct flights to Patmos. The nearest airport is on the island of Kos or Samos. You can reach by ferries from there.
Accommodation: There are many options from luxury hotels to boutique hostels. The Grikos and Chora areas are ideal for accommodation.
Best Time: Between the end of May and the beginning of September, the weather is good and the crowds are less. July and August are quite busy months.

As soon as you set foot in Patmos, you encounter a different energy. It is much quieter than the crowded Greek islands, but much deeper. Intertwined with history, friendly with nature, at peace with flavor.
