Imagine yourself as if you boarded the ferry from Kuşadası one morning and landed half an hour later in another world. Time moves slowly, people walk slowly, glasses are filled early as you pass through passport control. Geraniums hang down from balconies, the smell of anise and laughter wafts up from the streets. It is one of the rare places that can be so close to Turkey and yet feel so “other”. If you want to escape for a few days and lie by the sea, walk in the mountain villages, sip wine and stare absentmindedly at the sea, you can choose.

How to get to Samos Island?

The most common way to reach Samos is to take the ferry from Kusadasi. The journey takes about 45 minutes. You need a Schengen visa, but there are many people who come with a day visa (still check in advance). Ferries usually dock at the ports of Vathy, Pythagorion and Karlovasi. Our recommendation: Go to Pythagorion because it is a small town with a lot of soul. It's fun to go in the summer but it can be quieter in the spring.

How many days to stay in Samos?

If you just want to take the ferry and visit Pythagorion, it is also possible for a day trip. We think you should stay at least 3 nights and 4 days. The island seems small but every corner gives a different flavor.

Route suggestion:

Pythagorion sightseeing, sea at Remataki Beach, taverna on the beach in the evening.

Manolates - Vourliotes - Ampelos village tour, mountain air and wine.

Karlovasi - Potami waterfalls - Mikro Seitani beach.

What to buy in Samos Island?

The Pythagorean Glass, this interesting glass that empties everything if you overfill it, is both fun and philosophical. It is now a symbol of Samos. They are sold in most shops, but the well-made ones are usually in the village markets.

Samos Wine: Sweet white wines are famous. Mostly bought from Samos Wines cooperative but the boutique producer Nopera is a must try. Especially the golden liquor wine is incredible.

Olive Oil Soaps and Natural Cosmetics: You can find homemade soaps and lavender creams in small shops in Manolates village. The content is at the forefront, not the smell.

Handmade Ceramics and Jewelry: Local artists in the villages are doing great work. Especially the shops in Manolates are different and unique. Buy things like this instead of magnets.

Villages of Samos

Manolates Colorful balconies, quiet stone roads, handicraft shops, the heart of Samos. At the foot of the mountains and overlooking the sea. Loukas Tavern and Kallisti are a must.

Ampelos: Set among vineyard houses and grape fields, this village is a wine lover's dream. Waterfall walks can be done in spring. One of the right addresses for wine tasting.

Vourliotes & Stavrinides: Not touristy but very authentic. Go if you want to drink coffee and watch the life. There is a walking path from Stavrinides to Manolates but it's a bit challenging, be careful.

Pythagorion: This is usually the first place you see when you get off the ferry, but don't just stare.

Statue of Pythagoras,

Efpalinio Tunnel (ancient water channel)
Panagia Spiliani Monastery
And the Temple of Heraion a little further on is a must-see.
Have an ouzo by the harbor at sunset.

Beaches of Samos

Psili Ammos: A long, quiet beach. You might even get lucky with flamingos.
Potami Beach and Waterfall: Near Karlovasi, a hike is a must.
Mikro & Megalo Seitani: Hard to reach but legendary. Silence and nature.
Livadaki Beach: Ideal for those who want a younger and more social atmosphere.
