Located in the northern Aegean Sea, close to both Turkey and mainland Greece, Thassos Island captures your heart at first glance with its lush greenery, turquoise bays, and charming stone-paved streets. Often referred to as the “Green Island,” this small but characterful destination is a perfect fit for travelers seeking a peaceful yet fulfilling vacation immersed in nature.

How to Get to Thassos

Getting to Thassos is surprisingly simple. The most common route from Turkey is through the Ipsala Border Gate, followed by a drive to Kavala or Keramoti Port. Ferries from Keramoti run regularly and take about 30–40 minutes to reach Limenas, the island's capital. Alternatively, you can fly into Kavala International Airport and take a short drive to Keramoti. If you're traveling with your own vehicle, exploring the island’s hidden beaches and mountain villages becomes even more convenient.

Places to Visit in Thassos

Giola Lagoon: Located in the southern part of the island, Giola Lagoon is a natural rock pool carved by the sea, resembling a hidden jewel among the cliffs. With its vibrant turquoise water, it’s one of the most Instagram-worthy spots on the island. The locals call it “Aphrodite’s Tear,” and it's a popular cliff-jumping location with rocks as high as 8 meters. Although getting there requires a short hike, the breathtaking scenery makes it worth every step.

Aliki Ancient Site & Beach: Aliki is a must-see for both history buffs and nature lovers. This site features the remains of ancient marble quarries and harbor ruins, nestled between two crystal-clear bays. Spend your morning exploring the ruins, and your afternoon swimming in the sea, all surrounded by olive and pine trees. It's one of the most iconic and picturesque parts of the island.

Archangel Michael Monastery: Dramatically perched on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, the Archangel Michael Monastery offers both spiritual and scenic value. The calm and serene atmosphere of the monastery contrasts beautifully with the powerful sea views below. Modest attire is required to enter, but the experience is deeply rewarding and peaceful.

Panagia Village: Tucked in the island’s interior, Panagia is a traditional mountain village where time seems to stand still. Its stone houses, winding alleys, and flowing springs make it a charming place to explore. It's also one of the best spots to shop for local honey, olive oil, and handmade souvenirs. Don’t leave without enjoying a long lunch at a taverna with some meze and a glass of ouzo.

Best Beaches in Thassos

Marble Beach (Saliara): Surrounded by old marble quarries, Marble Beach features white pebbles and striking turquoise waters, giving it a tropical look. It’s a stunning beach that has become increasingly popular in recent years—arrive early to enjoy it at its best.

Golden Beach: With its long stretch of golden sand, Golden Beach is one of the island’s most popular beaches. Its shallow, calm waters make it ideal for families with kids. The beach is well-served by nearby tavernas and cafes, making it perfect for a full day of relaxation.

Makryammos: Just 2 km from Limenas, Makryammos is a well-organized beach surrounded by pine trees and soft sand. It’s a great option for those looking for comfort, shade, and quality facilities, especially for a relaxing beach day.

Glyfoneri: If you're looking to escape the crowds, Glyfoneri is a hidden gem. This small, peaceful bay is favored by locals and shaded by tall pine trees. It’s an ideal spot to unwind, swim, and enjoy nature in its most tranquil form.

Paradise Beach & Arsanas: Located on the southeastern coast of the island, Paradise Beach and Arsanas are known for their natural beauty and soft sand. These beaches are particularly magical during sunrise, offering a peaceful start to the day surrounded by unspoiled nature and calm waters.
