Places to Eat in Thassos
Food in Thassos is not just about filling your belly, it's about a conversation by the sea with the breeze, an afternoon at the taverna table in the mountain villages. If you're heading to this island, make sure you make a note of some of the culinary stops on your agenda.
Armeno: Armeno is right by the sea and always full of guests. It is so popular that even in the off-season it can be a problem to find an empty table. In this family-run place, you are not treated like a “stranger”; you are welcomed more like a cousin you haven't visited in a long time. The waiter comes to the table and lists the fresh seafood of the day, and you choose one of them. Octopus, mussels, sardines... Then they ask if anyone wants dessert - and yes, you do. Because their homemade desserts are the perfect way to end the meal.
Elia: This is a “gotta Instagram this” place. Elia is right next to the Blue View Hotel in the village of Limenaria. You don't have to be a hotel customer, the door is wide open for daily visitors. Your table is under the olive trees and you have an endless view of the Aegean... What's on the menu? Typical Greek appetizers such as calamari, saganaki, fried zucchini, but the main event is the wines. Wines selected from local vineyards make a real difference here. If you're looking for a romantic dinner, Elia is a great option.
Pefkospilia: If you like to eat and leave as soon as possible, Pefkospilia is not for you. If you are one of those who believe that food is a ritual, you will love this place. You sit on Pachis Beach, under the pine trees, in a breezy atmosphere. The menu is simple but delicious. There are classics such as moussaka, stifado (a meat stew made with wine), sutzukakia, similar to Izmir meatballs. Ordering ouzo and watching the local life at the tables next to you, especially when the sun is setting, is another dimension.
Akrogiali: Golden Beach is already one of the most popular beaches in Thassos, but Akrogiali also has a big share in this popularity. Located at the southern end of the beach, this restaurant is especially famous for its generous seafood portions. Calamari, shrimp, fresh appetizers, everything is prepared with local products and when the plates arrive at the table, your eyes are already full. An immaculate table, feet in the sand, the sea just a few steps away, what more could you want?
Iatrou: The seafood is great, but if you're in the mood for a bit of meat, the tavernas in the mountain villages are for you. Iatrou in Theologos is especially known for its goat meat dishes. The menu is nothing fancy, but the kitchen knows its stuff. A simple salad, a side of homemade fries and the mountain air is more than enough. The atmosphere around you fills you up as much as the food on your plate. There is also live music every Thursday and Saturday, try to catch it if you want to end the evening with local tunes.
