Time almost stops on Thassos Island. You have only one goal at the start of the day and that is to capture the moment. Thassos is an island in the north of Greece, on the peaceful shores of the Aegean Sea. Thassos may be a small island, but every village, every beach, every meal takes you on a different journey. It combines the deep traces of the past and the immense beauty of nature. This island is a perfect place not only for sightseeing, but also for slowing down your life and resting your soul.
Where and What to Eat in Thassos Island?
When exploring Thassos, it's impossible not to mention the food. The island's cuisine is a blend of everything from sea to mountain, fresh produce to traditional flavors. Thassos' seafood offers the guarantee of freshness and naturalness in every bite. The most unforgettable experience is a dish made from goat meat in the local mountain villages. Sardines, anchovies, shrimp, calamari, octopus, sea bream, mullet, you name it. Especially in the harbor taverns, the memory of the grilled octopus at sunset is engraved in the heart, not the stomach. Sitting in Armeno and choosing the fresh fish of the day or eating sardines with ouzo in Pefkospilia should be at the top of the list of things to do in Thassos. Traditional dishes prepared with goat and lamb meat are served in a wonderful atmosphere, especially in tavernas in mountain villages like Theologos. Iatrou restaurant has a simple yet satisfying menu. The Throuba olives of Thassos are very elegant on the palate despite their wrinkled appearance. Add a low-acid, aromatic olive oil and you can't beat the taste. Thassos honey takes its flavor to a whole new level with the extracts collected by bees from the flora of the island.
Thassos Island History
The history of the island is engraved in its stones. Ruins dating back to the 7th century BC, ancient theaters and old marble quarries tell you the island's story of thousands of years. The charm of Thassos is not only in the past, but in every moment. The beaches you visit during the day take on a completely different identity at night. Watching the sunset from the beach of Limenas, you feel as if all the colors in the world belong to you for a moment. Thassos is rich not only in nature but also in its past. At every step, a stone wall or an ancient ruin greets you from another era. Limenas is the capital of the island. It is a bustling seaside town and almost like a time capsule. While having a frappe on the beach, if you go up a bit and visit the Archaeological Museum, you can witness artifacts from the 7th century BC. The Acropolis, which you can reach by walking up the city, is quite impressive with its view and history. Sitting on the stones of the ancient theater and looking at the sea is like living the past in the present. Kalogeriko, which once belonged to the Vatopedi Monastery, is now a center of modern art. It hosts exhibitions, you can visit here. Thassos' famous white marble is still used all over the world. Seeing the places where these stones are quarried allows you to look at the architecture and the story of the island from a different perspective.
