Bergama, formerly known as Pergamon, is a district located within the borders of Izmir city and famous for its ruins. It hosts many local and foreign tourists every period of the year. In addition to its history and culture, it has come to the fore with its natural beauties and its fame has spread not only to our country but also to the world.Bergama is located in the north of Izmir province and in what is known as the Bakırçay basin. It is one of the largest districts of our country. It is close to the Mediterranean climate as climate characteristics. Its economy is generally based on agriculture and animal husbandry, especially beekeeping.
The history of Bergama dates back to the 7th century BC. It is a town that has hosted deep-rooted civilisations such as Persian, Lydian, Macedonian, Pergamon, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. In the Hellenistic Age, the highest and most powerful of the civilisations in the region is known as the Kingdom of Pergamon. Bergama has continued its existence as one of the most important cultural centres of the region for centuries. So much so that Pergamon, Pergamon, is also known as the place where the first parchment was made, the first Asian library and the first hospital was located. Psychotherapy, which is a treatment method, first emerged in this region; the first natural treatment, the first treatment with plants, that is, the first treatment with pharmacology, and the city where the Snake column, the symbol of medicine and pharmacy, is known as Pergamon. The first city to hold a festival in the world is also recorded as Bergama.
Bergama Asklepieion was one of the most famous health centres of the 2nd century AD. Here, patients were treated with medicines made from medicinal herbs growing in the surroundings, indoctrination methods, water and sun baths, theatre performances and concerts.
With all these, Bergama is one of the must-see places. Bergama Museum is the first archaeological museum of our country. With its history, ruins, hot springs, natural beauties, food culture and hospitality of its people, Bergama is a district of unique beauty. Today, Bergama Kermesi is organised every year on the last Friday of May in Bergama. This increases the number of tourists coming to the region.
