Among the Greek Islands, there are places that take you in at first glance and where you can spend more than an ordinary vacation. Hydra is just such a place. As soon as you step off the ferry, you feel that time moves a little slower here. No car noise, no exhaust fumes. Transportation in Hydra is still the old-fashioned way, either on foot or with mules or donkeys. This in itself is a matter of character. There is a simplicity that permeates the stones and a serenity that permeates the roads. Hydra is an island for those who come here not only to swim in the clear waters of the Aegean or to taste delicious seafood, but also to breathe, to distance themselves and to hear their own voice. Artists, writers and photographers have not fallen in love with this island for nothing. Every street is full of inspiration.

How to get to Hydra Island?

Hydra is very close to Athens. It can be reached in about 1.5-2 hours by fast ferries departing from Piraeus Port. Ferries usually depart in the morning and evening. Since there is no airport or private car use on the island, the only transportation is by sea. When you arrive in Hydra, be prepared to carry your luggage and walk the stone streets. Small local staff carrying heavy luggage by mule will be waiting for you at the harbor entrance.

Hydra Island's harbor

The harbor area, the center of Hydra, is like a stage. A huge paved area, cafes and restaurants lined up side by side, small boats tied to the shore. At sunset, this view turns into a painting. Having a coffee here, watching the sea in the early morning or sipping a light drink in the cool of the evening is one of the best ways to capture the Hydra spirit.

How is Transportation in Hydra Island?

One of the most striking features of Hydra Island is that motorized vehicles are completely prohibited. This means that you will not see any cars, motorcycles or bicycles on the island.

On foot,

On mule and donkey back,

Or by sea taxi.

Beaches in Hydra Island

Hydra's beaches preserve their natural structure. Most beaches can be reached on foot or by sea taxi.

Vlychos Beach: It is a quiet, stony beach. It can be reached on foot in 20-25 minutes. There are one or two simple taverns next to it.
Mandraki Beach: It stands out with its turquoise water and calmness. If you don't want to walk, you can reach it by boat from the harbor in 10 minutes.
Hydronetta Cliffs: Not an ideal place for swimming, but unique for watching the sunset. There is also a cafe. It gets crowded especially in the evening.
Where to Eat in Hydra Island?

Hydra has small but exclusive restaurants and taverns. All of them are ambitious about seafood.

Xeri Elia Douskos Taverna: A favorite among visitors to the island. It is located in a shady, stone courtyard. The daily dishes are prepared with traditional recipes. Especially recommended for lunch.
Sunset Restaurant: A place that lives up to its name. The view is legendary. It serves fusion cuisine, but you'll be happier if you base your expectations on atmosphere rather than just flavor.
Hydronetta: Bar/cafe style. A pleasant afternoon spot with cocktails, salads and snacks. It should be visited especially at sunset.
Shopping in Hydra Island

Hydra is an island steeped in art. Many artists live here or spend part of the year here. You can find various art galleries, ceramic workshops and boutique shops on the island. Consider buying local soaps, olive oil-based creams, handmade jewelry and art books.
