Bolu Guide

Located in the Western Black Sea Region, Bolu is a city where shades of green and blue intertwine harmoniously. Known as the homeland of Köroğlu, Bolu has gained worldwide fame for its talented chefs and delicious cuisine. With its rich cultural heritage, stunning nature, and deep-rooted history, Bolu has welcomed numerous civilizations over the centuries, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. Each season unveils a different beauty, offering visitors a unique experience throughout the year.

The history of Bolu dates back to the 8th century BC when the Bebriks were the first known settlers of the region. Later, the Bithynians established their rule, and the area became known as the Kingdom of Bithynia. Over the centuries, Bolu came under the influence of powerful civilizations such as the Romans, Byzantines, Anatolian Beyliks, the Seljuks, and ultimately the Ottoman Empire. Following the proclamation of the Republic in 1923, Bolu officially became a province of Turkey.

The origin of Bolu’s name traces back to the Byzantine era when the city was referred to as "Polis." With the arrival of the Turkmens in the 11th century, the city was renamed Bolu, and it has retained this name ever since.

Bolu’s climate is a mix of both the Black Sea and continental climates. While the coastal areas enjoy a humid and mild climate, the mountainous regions block the humidity from penetrating inland, creating a colder and drier environment. Thanks to its rich vegetation, Bolu is one of Turkey’s most forested provinces. The coastal areas are covered with beech and oak trees, higher altitudes are dominated by pine and fir forests, while the inner parts feature steppe landscapes.

With its breathtaking scenery, cultural richness, and historical landmarks, Bolu attracts thousands of tourists throughout the year. In summer, visitors can explore the city center and lush highlands, while spring is the perfect time to admire the beauty of Abant Lake. During winter, the ski resort of Kartalkaya becomes a hub for winter sports enthusiasts.

To accommodate visitors, Bolu offers a variety of hotels, ranging from luxurious five-star resorts to cozy boutique hotels. Whether in the city center or in Bolu’s picturesque districts, travelers can find a wide selection of accommodation options. While hotels in the city center generally serve as business hotels, those located by the lakes or in the mountains offer a more tranquil and nature-inspired getaway. Most hotels operate on a bed-and-breakfast basis, but half-board and full-board options are also available.

During the winter season, visitors can stay at boutique hotels in Kartalkaya for an unforgettable skiing experience. In spring, hotels around Abant Lake provide a perfect retreat in nature, while summer travelers often prefer accommodations in the highlands or near lakes.

Bolu hotels are known for their elegant architecture and stylish interior designs, offering modern amenities and a comfortable stay. With a variety of options available, tourists can enjoy a seamless and relaxing holiday experience.
