Located in the Western Black Sea Region, Bolu is a city where shades of green and blue intertwine harmoniously. The history of Bolu dates back to the 8th century BC when the Bebriks were the first known settlers of the region. Later, the Bithynians established their rule, and the area became known as the Kingdom of Bithynia. Over the centuries, Bolu came under the influence of powerful civilizations such as the Romans, Byzantines, Anatolian Beyliks, the Seljuks, and ultimately the Ottoman Empire. Following the proclamation of the Republic in 1923, Bolu officially became a province of Turkey.

The origin of Bolu’s name traces back to the Byzantine era when the city was referred to as "Polis." With the arrival of the Turkmens in the 11th century, the city was renamed Bolu, and it has retained this name ever since.

Bolu’s climate is a mix of both the Black Sea and continental climates. While the coastal areas enjoy a humid and mild climate, the mountainous regions block the humidity from penetrating inland, creating a colder and drier environment. Thanks to its rich vegetation, Bolu is one of Turkey’s most forested provinces. The coastal areas are covered with beech and oak trees, higher altitudes are dominated by pine and fir forests, while the inner parts feature steppe landscapes.
