Aegina Island Guide

Would you like to hop on a ferry from Athens and arrive on a peaceful yet characterful island just an hour away?  Aegina is just such a place. With its historical depth, simple beauty and warm people, it's a place that makes you say “I'm glad I came”.

How to get to Aegina?

Transportation is really easy. You can get to Aegina by ferries departing regularly from the Piraeus Port of Athens. It takes 40 minutes with the fast ferries and about 1 hour and 15 minutes with the classic ones. It is even possible to go early in the morning and return in the evening, but staying overnight would be much more enjoyable to experience this island.

Places to visit

Temple of Aphaia: Located in the east of the island, near Agia Marina. Built in the Doric order, this temple is breathtaking in terms of both architecture and landscape. Moreover, it is considered one of the best preserved temples of Ancient Greece.

Aegina Archaeological Museum: Did you know that it was the first archaeological museum in Greece, founded in 1828? It exhibits ceramics, sculptures and many precious artifacts from Aegina's past. Small but impressive.

Kolona Archaeological Site: Just north of the center, overlooking the sea. There is only one column from the Temple of Apollo, but the archaeological area around it is quite large. A great route for an afternoon walk.

The Monastery of Agios Nektarios: An important landmark in the Greek Orthodox world. Dedicated to St. Nektarios, this grand monastery is both spiritually and architecturally impressive. If you have the chance, come to one of the services inside, the atmosphere is mesmerizing.

Perdika Village: One of the most charming places in Aegina. This small fishing village in the south is a spot where time passes slowly. Don't leave the island without having dinner in the taverns by the sea. You can also take a boat from here to Moni Island and swim in the crystal clear waters.

Portes Village: A fishing village far from the tourist crowds, where you can be alone with nature. It also has a very suitable sea for diving enthusiasts. It is perfect for those who long for silence and naturalness.

Agia Marina Beach: Very popular for its sandy beaches and water sports opportunities. It is also a comfortable option for families. Umbrellas and sun loungers can be rented, and if you get hungry, the small restaurants on the beach come to the rescue.

The food and drink culture in Aegina is a discovery in itself. The freshest seafood, olive oil dishes, calamari, grilled octopus... The list is endless. If you sit at a table with a large group, the portions are large enough to make the cost per person quite reasonable. Moreover, the local table wines are affordable and delicious. Be sure to taste the desserts, ice creams and liqueurs related to the island's famous pistachio. You can find a variety of products in the pistachio shops in the center.
