Things to do in Sifnos Island
Sifnos is a small but full island. When you come here, you won't just be lounging on the beaches, you'll also experience an unforgettable vacation steeped in history, architecture, nature and handicrafts.
Kastro Village, one of the most impressive places in Sifnos, is a historical settlement built on a hill, surrounded by medieval stone walls. Walking through the domed passageways, small chapels and stone houses, you feel as if you have been transported back in time. At the end of the village, at the point where the sea and the rocks meet, the Eptamartyros Chapel captivates visitors with its postcard-perfect view. Watching the view from here towards the harbor of Seralia is like a meditation.
The villages in the heart of Sifnos, Apollonia, Artemonas, Katavati, Pano and Kato Petali, Agios Loukas and Exambelos are home to the most beautiful examples of Cycladic architecture. Whitewashed houses, blue windows, cobblestone streets and lots of bougainvillea. Each village is like a different painting. The walking routes between the villages offer a quiet and peaceful path of discovery. Especially for those interested in architecture, these villages are like open-air classrooms.
At night, all roads lead you to Apollonia's famous street. Filled with restaurants, cafes, boutique shops and patio bars, this street is a must on the island for an afternoon stroll and a light cocktail to say goodbye to the night. It's the perfect setting for a quiet and intimate evening.
The soil of Sifnos is fertile and pottery is a tradition, even an art form. The ceramics produced on the island for centuries are known all over Greece. If you want to see and buy ceramics made by hand on traditional wheels, be sure to visit the Folk Museum in Apollonia and the pottery workshops scattered all over the island.
One of the most peaceful spots on the island, Vathi is a natural cove-shaped island that envelops you in its embrace. With its calm, glassy sea and fishermen's restaurants lining the shore, it looks like a painting. The 16th century Church of St. Taxiarchis, located by the beach, has become the symbol of the bay.
The Krisopigi Monastery, built on a steep cliff, is one of the holiest and most impressive buildings in Sifnos. Early in the morning, the view of the sun rising behind the monastery's bell tower is mesmerizing. This 17th-century monastery is one of the most important pilgrimage centers on the island and offers visitors a mystical tranquility.
