Small & Boutique Hotels in Sporades Island
If you dream of a vacation in the northeast of Greece, far from the crowds but in touch with nature, you may prefer the Sporades Islands. Located in the middle of the Aegean Sea, just off the mainland, this small archipelago consists of four main islands that have managed to stay in the shadow of crowded routes: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros. They all have a different spirit, but what they have in common is tranquillity, naturalness and pure beauty. Unlike the typical Aegean islands, Sporades is much greener, much quieter and still largely unspoiled. With vast pine forests, pristine beaches, local village life and crystal clear waters, these islands are perfect for travelers who love exploring but want to slow down. It is possible to be alone with nature and experience traditional Greek culture. In addition, the nearby uninhabited islands, large and small, are also easily accessible by boat. If you want to take a boat trip away from the crowds, this region will fascinate you.
How to get to the Sporades Islands?
Transportation to these islands is easier than you think. From the mainland, you can take a ferry from the ports of Volos, Agios Konstantinos, Kymi or Mantoudi. During the summer months, ferries are frequent, especially to Skiathos and Skopelos. It is also possible to reach Skiathos directly from Athens with a short flight. As ferries between the islands also run regularly, it is easy to see several islands on the same trip.
Sporades Islands: Which one is for you?
Skiathos: Boasting a vibrant nightlife, water sports and lively beaches, Skiathos is the most popular of the islands. Especially Koukounaries Beach attracts attention with its natural beauty and facilities. The cafes and bars around the Old Harbor are very pleasant in the evenings.
Skopelos: Home to thousands of shades of green, this island is a haven for nature lovers. Since the 2007 movie Mamma Mia! was filmed here, it also attracts movie buffs. The walk to the Church of Agios Ioannis is a visual and spiritual experience.
Alonissos: The simplest, most natural island of Sporades. Perfect for those who want to stay away from the crowds. The National Marine Park, Europe's largest marine protected area, is located here. If you are lucky, you can even see Mediterranean seals.
Skyros: The largest but also the least known island of Sporades. A favorite for those who want to get away from the crowds completely. The capital, Chora, sits on a hilltop and boasts a medieval castle. Skyros is an intimate and local island that feels undiscovered.
In addition to the four main islands, there are around 20 small and mostly uninhabited islands waiting to be explored by sea. Especially islands like Tsougria offer great stops for boat trips. Clear bays, tranquility and a day alone with nature make these routes an unforgettable escape.
