Places to Eat in Ikaria Island
Ikaria's tables are as unforgettable as its sea. The spirit of the island is already based on living slowly, and the same is true when it comes to eating and drinking: you take your time, you order what you want, and hours pass at the table.
Naiades Taverna (Nas Beach): Very close to Nas Beach, on the edge of the cliff, with a wonderful view of the golden sunset, this taverna is small, warm and family-run. A sweet mother and daughter run the place. They are so sincere that before you order, they say “come and look in the kitchen, see what's in the kitchen” and open the pots one by one and explain all the dishes. When you see it, you want to eat everything. The result? We chose the baked sardines, crispy red mullet, roasted eggplant and cacıki and it was delicious.
Sto Kampi (Agios Dimitrios Village): A delicious mountain restaurant in Agios Dimitrios, on the way to Christos Raches. You know how there are some restaurants where you can feel the flavor of the food even when you open the menu? The owner cooks what he likes, what he won't eat is not on the menu. You can try the baked kid with lemon sauce, grilled cutlet with cacıki, imam bayıldı, grilled cheese here, it was quite delicious.
Sto Gialo Kanei Fourtouna (Magganitis Village): If you've been to Seychelles Beach, you'd be remiss not to stop by this taverna on the way back. It is in the small harbor of Magganitis village, just across the colorful boats. The atmosphere here is different. Even having a drink against the sea with island music playing in the background is good for you. You'll be lucky if you eat here too, because the appetizers are delicious and the fish is fresh. But if you don't need to eat, just sit and enjoy the view with a beer or ouzo, that's enough.
Bonus Small Taste Spots
To Teleion (Christos Raches): A sweet bar/cafe that you will find open at night. It's full of books, the coffee is good, the desserts are homemade. Locals hang out too. It's a great place to have a cold drink, flip through a book, and end the night with some low-key music.
Cafes in Platanos Square (Christos Raches): In the evening, the square comes alive, and hours pass with coffee, rakomelo (raki with honey) and local desserts in tiny cafes. Especially if there is music, you can't beat it.
