Oludeniz Guide
Oludeniz is approximately 130 kilometers from the center of Muğla and 12 kilometers from Fethiye. Oludeniz, located on the Teke Peninsula, has a geographical shape that we call a lagoon, or abalone. One of the few lagoon formations in our country, it has a very interesting and beautiful view. Oludeniz consists of two parts: The first part is the wavy part of Ölüdeniz, which extends from the bay to the lagoon. The other is the real Ölüdeniz, which we all know, where the lagoon is located. It has a calm, shallow and magnificent sea covered with white sand with not a single algae on the bottom. The golden colored, magnificent Ölüdeniz beach was chosen as the most beautiful beach in the world in 2006 with over eighty percent of the votes it received from all over the world.
Ölüdeniz dates back to ancient times as a settlement. The ancient Lycian civilization ruled in these lands. Today, you can still find traces of past civilizations in some places. The Lycians called Ölüdeniz “the land of light and sun”, while in the Middle Ages the town was called “the distant land”.
Belcekız Legend is one of the most well-known legends of Ölüdeniz, which is home to many different legends. This legend also gives the region its name. In very old years, a very beautiful peasant girl named Belcekız lived in the region. She was one of the most beautiful girls in the region. In those times, the ships passing through here would anchor offshore and go ashore with their boats to get water. One day, a young man, the captain's son, who was one of the sailors who went ashore with their boats, saw Belcekız when he went ashore and fell in love with her. The girl also fell in love with the handsome son of the captain. Later, Belcekız would come to the shore every day and watch for her lover, the ship would anchor every time it passed through here and when the boy came ashore, the two lovers would meet.
One day, while the ship was passing these shores again, a storm occurred. The boy told his father to dock on the shores of Ölüdeniz, a sheltered shore, but his father did not listen to his son, thinking that his wish was to see his lover. The ship, caught between the waves that grew bigger and bigger, struggled with the waves for a long time without docking. Meanwhile, the captain, who had a fight with his son, threw his son into the sea with a blow of the oar. After the young captain died on the spot, Belcekız committed suicide by throwing herself off the rocks. Since then, the place where the girl died was called Belcekız and the waters where the young captain died were called Ölüdeniz.
The lands that witnessed such a love story years ago still harbor completely different natural beauties today. In addition to a peaceful vacation in the region, you can spend time with many activities. Oludeniz is one of the most suitable regions in the world for paragliding. Moreover, you do not need to be experienced. All you need to do is to make an agreement with one of the agencies.
