Balıkesir Guide
The name Balıkesir is believed to have evolved from Paleo Kastro, the name given by Roman Emperor Hadrian, who built a castle in the area. Later, when the region came under the rule of the Karesi Beylik, the city was named Karesi. After the proclamation of the Republic, it regained its original name, Balıkesir, in 1926. According to another popular story, the city was once called Bal-ı Kesr because of its famously delicious honey, and this name eventually transformed into Balıkesir.
The history of settlement in Balıkesir dates back to around 8000 BC. Excavations in the area have uncovered artifacts from the Paleolithic and Neolithic ages. In ancient times, the city was known as Mysia, which means "beech tree" in the Lydian language. The area stretching from Mount Ida (Kazdağı) to the shores of the Sea of Marmara up to the Dardanelles was called Little Mysia, while the rest was known as Greater Mysia.
Over the centuries, the region came under the control of the Leleges, Hittites, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and finally the Ottoman Empire. Thanks to this long and rich history, many ancient ruins can still be found throughout Balıkesir today. Naturally, the cultural heritage of Balıkesir is also quite diverse and rich.
The climate varies throughout the region: the inland areas reflect the typical characteristics of the Aegean climate, while the Aegean coastline has a Mediterranean climate, and the Marmara coastline shows more of a Black Sea influence.
