Astypalaia Island Guide
Somewhere far away, in the middle of the Aegean, there is an island that looks like a butterfly when you look at a map: Astypalea (Astypalea). Far away from the crowds, a place where time flows a little slower, where nature reigns in its own rhythm. The scent of thyme carried by the wind, the quiet steps of goats, tiny coves hidden among the rocks. If you are reading this article, it means that you are now dreaming of going to that island.
Transportation to Astypalaia
It takes a bit of effort to get to Astypalaia, but believe me, it is worth every minute. There are daily flights from Athens. If you want to reach Astypalaia by ferry, you can transfer from islands like Kalymnos, Paros and Kos. For example, you can cross from Bodrum to Kos and then take the ferry to Kalymnos at night to reach the island.
Chora - Center of the Island
Chora, the white city on the hill, is like a postcard in every photo frame. With its labyrinthine narrow streets, blue shuttered houses and bougainvillea-covered balconies, it is a beautiful example of Cycladic architecture. Perched at the top, the Venetian castle and its two white churches embrace the island. There is a small library in one of the windmills: Stella's Mill. Time stands still here with the smell of books, Greek melodies and Stella's warm conversation. He will immediately recognize that you are Turkish, and as someone whose roots go back to Cappadocia, he will even recommend you Turkish books translated from Greek.
Beaches of Astypalaia
Kaminakia Beach: A miracle of nature hidden between two rocks. You swim in the sea accompanied by goat sounds coming from between the rocks. Linda's Taverna on the beach is a flavor stop with dishes prepared with the products they grow themselves.
Vatses Beach: A small cove but with character. With its simple beach bar, turquoise waters and tranquility, it's a favorite for swimmers. For good swimmers, the nearby Negro Cave can also be a route of discovery.
Steno Beach: In the narrow passage that connects the two sides of the island, this beach is easy to reach and peaceful. The Steno Taverna next to it offers exceptionally delicious seafood despite its unassuming appearance.
Maltezana & Schinontas: Places to go for the taste buds rather than the sea. The Astifagia restaurant in particular combines traditional and modern Greek cuisine. Chef Tanasis' Turkish Airlines background may surprise you.
Pera Gialos: Although it is a harbor beach, it is very clean. A simple alternative where you can leave your hotel and swim in the sea in just a few steps.
Hidden Paradises: If there is no wind, I suggest you go by boat to islets like Koutsomyti, Kounoupi, Agia Kiriaki. The tiny wings of the butterfly-shaped Astypalaia are hidden here.
Vathi - Fishing Village
An almost hidden corner in the north of the island. A tiny lagoon, a few boats in the harbor, the sound of rattles in the background... And most importantly: Stavroula's Taverna. This is the kitchen where you'll taste the most traditional Greek home-cooked food, with grandmothers' recipes.
What to do?
Snorkel exploration: Watch the undersea world among the reefs at Kaminakia and Vatses.
Meet the books: Browse Stella's books at the windmill in Chora.
Taste local products: Chlori cheese, goat meat, fresh kakavia soup and homemade pougia pie are a must.
Rent an ATV or car: Essential for transportation to deserted bays.
Watch the sunset from Chora: a fairytale landscape with windmills.
