Places to see in Iznik
Located in the center of Iznik, Hagia Sophia Orhan Mosque is an impressive building that has been home to different civilizations throughout history. When I stepped inside, I saw mosaics from the Byzantine period and architectural touches from the Ottoman period, a vivid example of how different cultures blended together.
Walking along the walls of Iznik Castle, which surrounds the city, took me back in time. Starting from the Istanbul Gate, it was fascinating to watch the view of Lake Iznik over the walls. The castle has played an important role in the defense of the city throughout history and it was really impressive to feel that.
Walking along the shores of Lake Iznik and watching the sunset was a peaceful experience. I canoed in the calm waters of the lake and enjoyed being in touch with nature. It was also a delicious experience to taste the fresh fish in the lakeside restaurants.
Iznik Ancient Theater, built during the reign of Roman Emperor Trajan, is an unmissable place for history lovers. It was fascinating to stand in the center of the stage and imagine the plays performed here centuries ago. The architecture and acoustics of the theater show that it was one of the engineering marvels of the Roman period.
I visited Eşref Eroğlu's tile workshop to see Iznik's famous tiles up close. It was a unique experience to watch the process of making the tiles shaped by the hands of the masters and even to paint my own tile plate. It was possible to feel the combination of art and labor here.
If you are looking for an adventure intertwined with nature, you should definitely see Sansarak Canyon. During my walk in the canyon, I walked along the stream and cooled off in the natural pools formed by small waterfalls. Although the hiking trail was challenging at times, the views offered by nature were worth all the fatigue.
