Trulya 1881
“From time to time, everyone needs to find a piece of their past between the stone walls of a village house.”
And that's exactly why, if you're looking to hit a little “soul reset,” pack a few suitcases full of your fatigue and listen to the story of Trulya 1881. 🎒🌿
3 Days in Trulya: A Serene Escape in the Memory of Stones
If the word “village” brings to mind nothing more than the sound of a tractor, distant dog barks, and lots of mulberry trees... well, you’re not wrong. But this place has something extra: here, everything has meaning, a voice, and a soul.
Trulya 1881 is a Greek house built in the heart of Demirköy in 1881. Today, behind its stone walls, it tells a quiet story woven with modern comforts.
🕰️✨
Even for just three days, as I left the noise of Istanbul behind and arrived at this small hotel, I first heard my own inner voice. Then the birds. Then the sound of apples falling from the trees in the garden...
As Virginia Woolf once wrote, “Silence is sometimes the loudest voice” — and Trulya is exactly that kind of place.
Escaping Istanbul, Embracing Stone
The owner, Ms. Deniz, was originally a textile exporter. “I wanted to save this house,” she says.
It’s hard not to praise the hotel, but I’ll keep it grounded: it falls into the “mid-luxury” segment — minimalist, yet elegant. Stylish without being extravagant, warm without being plain. In short, it has a “chic but humble” vibe.
Thrace’s Quietest Gem: A 3-Day Trulya Getaway
📍 Day 1: Peace & Caves
The day begins with warm bread fresh from the stone oven, served in the garden. A breakfast so delightful even the birds want to join in 🐦
Then off to Dupnisa Cave. Stalactites, stalagmites, and cool air... it’s like nature’s underground poetry.
In the afternoon, I chase history: the Demirköy Foundry and the hidden Sislioba Castle in the forest. A short hike takes you there, but the view is grand.
Dinner at Trulya features a traditional local meal — lamb tandoori. As I sit in the garden under candlelight, I keep wondering: “Why didn’t I come here sooner?” 🍷🌙
📍 Day 2: Floodplain Forests & İğneada
Today I head toward İğneada. The floodplain forests are mesmerizing. Walking by Hamam Lake, I lose myself — emotionally, that is; my sense of direction is just fine 😄
Touching the stones of the lighthouse, I hear them whisper, “We’ve been here since 1866.”
As the sun sets, I eat turbot by the sea. The view from Sahintepesi is breathtaking. And just as the sun disappears, Proust’s words come to mind:
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
📍 Day 3: Time to Embrace Nature
An early morning hike in the Yıldız Mountains. It takes your breath away — but the view gives it right back.
I visit Balkaya Village and stumble upon a waterfall — not too powerful, but its sound is soothing 🌊
Later, I head to Beğendik Village, but time runs short. Maybe some places are meant to remain unfinished — so we have a reason to return.
On the way back, one last coffee at Trulya... a cup that warms me, carrying the past gently into the present.
