Greece’s 9-Month Tourism Figures Revealed: Visitor Flow and Revenues Continue to Rise
Greece has released its tourism statistics for both September and the January–September period of 2025. The country’s upward trend in tourism is clearly reflected in both visitor numbers and tourism revenues.
5.1 Million Tourists Welcomed in September
The number of foreign visitors arriving in Greece in September increased by 3.6% compared to the same month last year, reaching 5.68 million. Airport arrivals rose by 5.1%, while land border entries grew by 1.9%, indicating that demand remained strong as the summer season drew to a close.
31.6 Million Visitors in the First Nine Months
According to data from the Bank of Greece, the number of international tourists visiting the country in the first nine months of 2025 increased by 4% year-on-year, reaching 31.6 million. Visitor flows showed notable growth from major source markets such as Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
18.8 Million Visitors from EU Countries
Between January and September, arrivals from EU member states rose by 0.8% to 18.8 million. Visitors from the euro area recorded a strong increase of 5.6%, while arrivals from non-euro EU countries continued their downward trend and fell by 8.1%.
Arrivals from non-EU markets, on the other hand, climbed by 9.3% to 12.7 million. This growth was attributed mainly to rising demand from long-haul destinations and non-EU Western European markets.
Germany Remains the Largest Source Market
Germany maintained its leading position with 4.8 million visitors, marking an 8.2% increase.
– United Kingdom: 4 million visitors (+4.3%)
– Italy: 1.9 million visitors (+7.1%)
– United States: 1.2 million visitors (+5.6%)
– France: 1.8 million visitors (–0.6%)
A similar pattern was observed in September: arrivals from the euro area rose by 14.1%, while visitors from non-euro EU countries decreased by 12.6%.
Tourism Revenues Surpass 20 Billion Euros
Tourism revenues in the first nine months of the year continued their upward momentum, increasing by 9% and reaching 20.13 billion euros. However, a decline in average visitor spending in September slightly slowed the pace of revenue growth.
Emphasis on a “Resilient and Quality-Driven Tourism Model”
Greece’s Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, emphasized that the strong performance of the tourism sector provides broad benefits to the economy and society.
Highlighting that quality tourism creates better employment opportunities, supports balanced development across destinations, and ensures a fairer distribution of benefits among local communities, Kefalogianni underscored the importance of strategic planning and cooperation in building a resilient and sustainable tourism model.
