Galata Guide
Galata is a few steps away from the crowds of Istanbul, but in a completely different world. There is another story in every corner, another Istanbul in every street. It feels like a city you are a stranger to, but also like a neighborhood you have lived in for years...
How to get there?
The easiest way to get there is via Karaköy. You can get off the tram at Karaköy station and take a short but sweet uphill walk towards Galata. If you prefer the subway, you can walk from Şişhane and glide towards Galata Tower via Serdar-ı Ekrem.
Must See Places
Galata Tower: Galata means tower first. If you want to watch Istanbul from a bird's eye view, this place is like a dream. If you go up at sunset, time seems to stand still as you watch the Bosphorus painted orange. You watch not with your eyes but with your heart.
Galip Dede Street: As you walk down from the Tower, this street lined with art galleries, music shops, coffee shops and small boutiques will make you lose track of time. Don't miss the street musicians. A heartfelt violin or ney melody may accompany you.
Galata Mevlevihanesi Museum: This is the most spiritual corner of Galata. When you step into the garden, you get disconnected from the city. It is peaceful and fascinating to see the Mevlevi culture and the traces of whirling dervishes in the exhibitions inside.
Galata Bridge: Walk on the bridge, throw a bagel to the seagulls, have a chat with the fishermen. As the sun sets, the redness of the Bosphorus turns Galata Bridge into a romantic painting.
Eating & Drinking Suggestions
Nakka Cafe:One of the closest and most sincere places to the tower. Take your tea and look at the sky of Istanbul through the window. Quiet but storied.
Pepo Galata: A place where modern cuisine meets nostalgia. The interior is warm and stylish. Perfect for dinner.
Genoa Bakery: A fresh croissant or pastry to go with your coffee... A must stop for a “hidden” morning pleasure in Galata.
Karaköy Fish Shop: Close to the Galata Bridge, its flavor is legendary. Ideal for those who enjoy raki and fish.
Shopping & Design
Atölye 11: Handmade jewelry, postcards, ceramics... If you are looking for an original gift or memory, you can spend hours here.
Lunapark: Vintage clothes and retro accessories in the spirit of Galata. If you want to smell Galata even through your shirt, this is the right address.
Art & Spirit
Salt Galata: This former Ottoman bank-turned-exhibition space is used as an exhibition space, art gallery and research center. There is a surprise on every floor.
Istanbul Modern (a bit of a walk): If you want to complete your day with art, this place is not to be missed. In its new location, as part of Galataport, it awaits you by the sea.
