Ways to Enjoyably Discover Kavala in 2 Days
When you arrive in Kavala, the first thing you notice is the smell of the sea, followed by a light breeze blowing in your face. The atmosphere of the old city, emanating from the stone streets, is immediately apparent. Here, everything moves a little slower, feels a little familiar, and is strangely beautiful. I only had two days here. When you ask if it was enough, it wasn’t enough to satisfy me, but it was more than enough to feel the city, get a little lost in its streets, and feel as if I had known it for years. If your path ever leads you to Kavala, I want to tell you how I spent those two days. Let’s explore together.
How to get to Kavala?
Getting to Kavala is actually much easier than you might think, especially if you live in Istanbul or Thrace. Don't worry about long journeys with multiple transfers; you can enjoy a pleasant drive in your own car. When you set off from Istanbul, you first enter Greece via the İpsala Border Gate. Passport control at the border can take a bit of time, but generally proceeds smoothly. The journey to Dedeağaç takes approximately 4-5 hours. From Dedeağaç, it’s just a 2-hour drive to Kavala. The signs along the way are clear, the roads are smooth, and the scenery makes the journey a pleasure. If you don't want to drive or prefer a comfortable bus ride, it is also possible to travel from Istanbul to Kavala by bus during the summer months. Companies such as Metro Turizm and Alpar Turizm operate direct seasonal services to Kavala. The journey may take a little longer, but it is a comfortable alternative where you can sleep, read a book, or listen to music.
What to Do in Kavala in 2 Days?
Day 1
It is essential to start the day with a nice breakfast. Our favorite was Psaraki. Right by the sea, with a pleasant view, we had crispy koulouri (Greek bagels) and feta cheese omelets. Both our eyes and stomachs were delighted. We had a coffee afterward, which took away all our fatigue. A little exercise after breakfast is good. We headed straight to Kavala Castle. You might sweat a little climbing up to this castle, which offers a bird's-eye view of the city, but the view from the top is worth it. On the way down, you'll be greeted by the impressive stone structure of the İmaret. This Ottoman-era structure gives you a sense of peace even if you don't go inside. On the way, you'll see the statue of Muhammad Ali Pasha, perhaps one of Kavala's most iconic symbols, and his house nearby. Seeing such deep traces of Turkish history in a Greek city is surprising and creates a heartfelt connection. Kavala evenings have a unique flavor. As you walk along the coast, a taverna is sure to catch your eye. Our recommendation: Kapileio Tou Zahou. It's cozy, rustic, but a true culinary destination. We ordered calamari and a seafood risotto. Alongside that, a glass of ouzo. Everything that came to the table was a delight for both our palates and our souls.
If you want to extend the night a bit, you can stop by Myloi Club, which is close to the beach. It's not very big, but it's full of energy and a fun place that local young people also prefer.

Day 2
You start the day by breathing in the scent of the sea. Although it is a little far from the city center, it is definitely worth going to Aqua Club Restaurant for breakfast. It is quite peaceful in the morning, the orange juice is fresh, the pastries are warm... One of the most peaceful ways to start the day. Kavala is a city that really has a lot to offer when it comes to beaches. There is something for those who love crowds and those who seek tranquility.
Here are three of our favorites:
Ammolofoi Beach: Fine golden sand, crystal-clear sea, and an energetic atmosphere. A favorite among young people.
Batis Multiplex: A more organized beach. There are sun loungers and umbrellas, and if you get hungry, you can find something to eat nearby. Suitable for families.
Tosca Beach: For those who love silence. Surrounded by nature, you can swim in the sea and read your book in peace. It's also ideal for families with children because the sea is calm and shallow.
After swimming, a refreshing break is just what you need. Order a Cretan-style mezze platter at Nayagos Seaside Tavern, along with olive oil-marinated squid and a cold Mythos beer. Find a shaded table and enjoy your meal while taking in the view. We want to end our last evening in Kavala at a special place. To Araliki is just such a place. It's a cozy and authentic taverna, away from the tourist crowds. The atmosphere becomes even more beautiful with live music. As the sounds of sirtaki play in the background, we slowly etch today and our vacation into our memories...

- It can be difficult to find a spot on the beach in the late afternoon. Go early and grab some shade.
- Don't drink ouzo too quickly; you need some meze to go with it. Otherwise, you may not remember the night.
- The feta cheese you buy at the market can cause a bomb effect in your suitcase on your return to Turkey. Pack it securely, or your luggage will smell wonderful.
