3-Day Autumn Itinerary in Crete
Places to Visit – Accommodation – Food & Drink – Beaches What’s Crete Like in Autumn?
Day 0.5 – “Setting Foot on the Island”
The moment I remembered I was a traveler, I had already landed in Heraklion or Chania with the morning flight from Athens. At dawn the air was still sweetly cool, the sky clear, and Crete’s mountains appeared on the horizon like silhouettes. Like the breath of Aphrodite…
I could almost hear lines whispering to me: “Crete in autumn is gentle; not as hot as summer, but its soul feels more inviting” — just as Fly Me to the Moon Travel’s “Crete in Autumn” guide had said.
With my backpack on my shoulder, my heart whispered “let it begin”. My three-day Cretan dream had started.
Day 1 – Conversing with the Wind in Chania
Places to Visit
* Chania Old Port & Venetian Lighthouse: Narrow streets, colorful houses, yellow-painted stones reflecting in the harbor… every corner looks like a postcard.
* Maritime Museum of Crete: On an island that lives with the sea, it feels good to experience history up close.
* Late Afternoon Boat Trips to Balos Lagoon or Elafonisi – the famous beaches of western Crete (traveler favorites). Nomadic Matt also praised Crete’s wide variety of beaches.
Food & Drink in Crete
* Breakfast: On the veranda of a small café near the Old Port — fresh olives, homemade cheeses, plates with halloumi. The perfect start to the day.
* Lunch: A traditional taverna along the harbor with sea views — dakos (Cretan-style bread with tomatoes) and seafood.
* Dinner: At one of the portside restaurants — fried octopus paired with local wine and acoustic music. The aftertaste is like salt mixed with lavender.
Evening walks along the harbor, watching the reflections on the sand… bring a smile.
Day 2 – Inner Crete, Nature & Villages
Places to Visit in Crete
* Imbros Gorge Hike: An 11 km canyon, ideal for those seeking nature and silence.
* Village Wandering: Old stone houses shaded by olive trees, the scent of freshly baked bread…
* Richtis Gorge + Waterfall + Hidden Beach Hike: Vegetation, the sound of water, and scenery blending into one.
Food & Drink
* Breakfast: A small village breakfast — homemade jams, yogurt with honey, warm pita bread.
* Lunch: A little taverna at the foot of the mountain — date salads, goat cheese, and seasonal vegetables.
* Dinner: By the village square, next to a wood stove — local wine and meze. One of those moments when I smiled and thought, “Wouldn’t you come here too?”
Day 3 – Beaches, the Sea & Farewell Tour
Beaches
They say in Crete “every beach is a different dream” — but I had three favorites:
1. Balos Lagoon — turquoise sea, shallow lagoon, magical scenery (especially in the morning light).
2. Elafonisi Beach — pink sands and light games dancing with the sea.
3. Secluded coves like Agia Fotini, Triopetra, Agios Pavlos — quieter, soul-soothing spots.
Early in the morning, before crowds arrive, diving into the sea, touching the coolness of the water, remembering yourself — that’s the essence of the trip.
Food & Drink & Nightlife in Crete
* Breakfast: A beachside café — croissant, fresh fruit, honey, and strong coffee.
* Lunch: A beach taverna — grilled calamari, carrots, light salads.
* Dinner: Returning to the port — fine dining or a modern Greek restaurant; afterwards a small bar, maybe a cocktail and some jazz.
* Bar tip: In Chania, small cocktail and taverna bars come alive with the rhythm of the locals. Just go with the flow.
Accommodation – Boutique Hotel Options in Crete Island
In October, prices drop and things get calmer. According to TripAdvisor and top travel guides, people favor unique buildings close to city centers. For Crete Island hotels and recommendations, visit https://www.boutiquesmallhotels.com/crete-hotels
Three suggestions:
1. Casa Delfino (Chania Old Town) — historic building, verandas, luxurious yet welcoming.
2. Avli (Rethymno) — boutique hotel with characterful décor, close to the center.
3. Domes Zeen Chania — close to the sea, blending modern touches.
Prices (October): Around €100–€200 per night, including breakfast.
Transportation & Ferries to Crete Island
* Turkey → Crete: Usually Istanbul → Athens flights, then domestic flights to Chania or Heraklion. I chose to fly.
* Alternative: Ferries from Turkey via Thessaloniki or Athens connections — prices vary depending on route; cabins come with an extra fee.
* On the island: Renting a car is very useful; public transport is limited.
What’s Crete Like in October?
Crete in October doesn’t make you wonder “is summer gone?”. Temperatures stay around 20–25°C, the sea is still warm, and mornings are sunny. The summer crowds are gone from the coasts; locals and nature reclaim the island. Travel blogs like Bucketlist Bums recommend September and October as the “peaceful Crete time,” far from tourist chaos.
My October adventure: morning walks in the cool air, lying on the beach under midday sun, evening meze and wine at a small taverna with a light breeze… perfectly in “let the night carry the mood” spirit.
🍳 Breakfast Spots in Crete:
* Phyllo Bakery (Chania) – Homemade pies, breakfast plates. All delicious.
* Koukouvaya (near Heraklion) – City view with coffee, plus desserts I loved.
* Paralia Seaside Restaurant (Rethymno) – Breakfast by the sea.
🍽 Lunch in Crete
* Tamam Restaurant (Chania) – Cretan cuisine with creative presentation. Exactly what I was looking for.
* Peskesi (Heraklion) – Traditional recipes with a modern twist. I wouldn’t recommend it if it weren’t good.
* Avli (Rethymno) – Cretan flavors served in a courtyard. Very different, in a good way.
🌅 Dinner & Tavernas in Crete
* Chrisostomos (Chania) – Wood-fired meats, authentic vibe, some mixed reviews but very “Turkish style.” 👍
* Ippokambos (Heraklion seafront) – Seafood and a spectacular sunset view.
* Prima Plora (Rethymno) – Elegant ambiance, fine dining by the sea.
🍷 Bars & Nightlife in Crete
* Sinagogi Cocktail Bar (Chania) – Atmospheric bar in the courtyard of an old synagogue. Worth a visit.
* Jailhouse Rock Bar (Malia) – For rock and live music lovers, geared towards young spirits.
* Swing Thing (Heraklion) – Cocktail bar with creative drinks. Perfect after dinner.
