Things to do in Thassos

Thassos is one of those places that makes you say “I must come back here” at first sight. This is an island where you can spend hours by the sea and then watch the sunset in a cool mountain village. Do you want peace, discovery, local flavors? All in one. There is plenty to do on this Greek island, which has managed to remain pleasant without being too touristy, but there is no rush. In fact, the best part of Thassos is that it takes you in without making you run anywhere.

Head to the Hills to Experience Traditions

From dipping your feet in the cool waters in the morning to sitting at a cool taverna table in one of the mountain villages in the afternoon, Thassos makes these transitions feel like a natural rhythm. As you rise above sea level, you are introduced to the traditional side of island life.

Panagia: This village in the northeast, at an altitude of 300 meters, is a cool respite from the heat. Stone houses, cobblestone streets and three squares, yes, three squares. There is also a traditional water mill still in operation. You can see with your own eyes how olive oil is produced.

Theologos: Located in the southeast, this village of 600 inhabitants carries the spirit of resistance of Thassos. The Ottoman-era mansion of Hatzigeorgis is now open as a museum. Every year in August, the village re-enacts a traditional Thassian wedding. You can watch the costumes worn by the locals, music and dances here.

Kazaviti (Big & Small): This pair of villages on the western side have stepped out of time. The view from the top of the mountains overlooking the sea is breathtaking. In the summer, a festival of music and dance called “Kazavitiana” is held in the stone theater. Life here is quiet, slow and very real.
