Things to do in Skiathos

When you set foot on Skiathos, first stop and take a deep breath. Because this island will give you days full of not only sea but also nature, peace and movement. What they call “more than an island vacation” is exactly what happens here. Your first discovery should be on the north coast. The beaches of Great and Little Aselinos, on both sides of the same bay, are truly mesmerizing, with golden sands and views of Mount Kounistra rising behind them. You can even swim between the beaches; it's like a meditation offered by nature. There is also a shabby but delicious taverna on the shore where you can shade yourself, a corner of tranquility you are looking for. Skiathos is not only about beaches. About two thirds of the island is covered with dense forests. So this is the perfect place not only for swimming but also for walking, exploring, sweating and clearing your head. There are about 25 marked walking routes in total, for all levels. Some are short and lightly paced, others more challenging, but the rewards are great: silence, panoramic views and hidden coves where sometimes no one is around.You can hike on your own, but if you want to add a bit of culture to the story, opt for a guided hike. For example, there is a route between the monasteries of Evangelistria and Kechria in the north of the island that takes about two hours. Along the way, you'll come across flat plains perfect for picnics, so don't forget to pack  a thermos of coffee and a snack or two. If you think hiking is not enough, mountain biking routes are also very popular. Thanks to the fresh air, shady roads and scenic stops, even a physical activity can soothe your soul. If you want to get out on the water, scuba diving in the clear, turquoise waters of Skiathos is truly otherworldly. There are many spots around the island where you can dive. You can see colorful corals, fish and sometimes even sunken ruins. These tours usually last a full day, so you leave in the morning and come back around sunset, leaving you with a salty but happy tiredness on your face. If you're looking for something lighter, take a day boat tour between the islands. Looking at the island from the sea, sometimes letting yourself be carried away by the rhythm of the small waves hitting the shore is as healing as walking on land.
