Small & Boutique Hotels in Skopelos Island
Life can be tiring sometimes. Crowded cities, hustle and bustle, traffic, noise. At times like these, we all need a little silence, a little nature and the peaceful sound of the sea. If you are looking for a place that offers all this together, Skopelos Island may be waiting for you.Skopelos, one of the lesser known but fascinating islands of the Aegean in the northeast of Greece, is famous for the movie Mamma Mia!, but its real power comes not from the movies, but from its unique natural beauties. With its tall pine forests, pristine beaches, white houses, flowery streets and delicious cuisine, this island sincerely offers everything that comes to mind when you think of a vacation.
How to get to Skopelos?
Skopelos is an island that fully deserves the description “a bit of a hidden paradise”. This means it takes a bit of effort to get there, but believe me, it's worth it when you arrive.
Ferry Transportation: To get to Skopelos from the mainland, you can take ferries from Volos, Agios Konstantinos, Mantoudi (Evia Island) or Thessaloniki. The number of ferries increases during the summer months. Travel time varies between 2 and 4 hours depending on the port.
Crossing via Skiathos: You can fly from Athens or Thessaloniki to Skiathos and then take a short ferry ride to Skopelos. Transportation between the airport and the port is very easy. Moreover, it is a pleasure to watch the first island views over the sea.
For those who want to go by car: You can drive your car to Mantoudi Port and take the ferry from there. Thus, you will have the opportunity to travel more freely on the island. But remember, the road conditions on the island are narrow and winding.
Places to visit in Skopelos Island
Agios Ioannis Chapel: You may remember from the movie Mamma Mia... The famous wedding scene was shot here. It is a tiny but very impressive church. Built on a rocky hill, it's a bit of a hike (about 100 steps), but the view is worth it. From the top, you can see the endless blue of the Aegean under your feet.
Panagitsa Pyrgos Church: Located near the center of the island, right on the edge of the sea, this church is perfect for watching the sunset. Romantic and peaceful. As the yellow light of the street lamps slowly burns, it creates a mesmerizing atmosphere against the white walls of the church.
Kastani and Milia Beaches: Kastani Beach became popular after the movie Mamma Mia, but it still retains its natural beauty. Milia is a slightly longer and quieter beach. Sun loungers, a few beach bars and lots of pine scent... When you enter the sea, the water is so clear that you can forget about swimming as you watch your feet.
Velanio Beach: A little further on from Stafilos Beach, this beach is more secluded and for those who want to be alone with nature. It is even officially a nudist beach. Silence, the sound of waves and pine trees... Ideal for those who want to turn off the phones for a day and rest the soul.
Where and What to Eat in Skopelos?
The cuisine of Skopelos is full of classic Greek flavors as well as unique recipes that reflect the spirit of the island.
Skopelos Pastry: Sheep cheese is wrapped in thinly rolled phyllo, then fried in olive oil. A breakfast classic with its golden color and crispy texture!
Ouzeri Anatoli: In the town of Skopelos, a place that conquers hearts with its music and appetizers. Especially in the evening, you can enjoy the sunset accompanied by ouzo.
Molos Taverna: Very assertive about seafood. Calamari, grilled octopus, shrimp saganaki... All fresh and delicious. Also the staff is very friendly.
To Kumata: Simple but elegant. You know how there are some places, as soon as you sit at the table, you say “I'm glad I came”? This is such a place. I recommend you to eat the fish here.
How to get around the island?
Skopelos is a small island but you may still need a car to get to the beaches and other villages. Especially for beaches like Milia and Kastani, you can either rent a car or take a minibus. There is also a taxi option, but it can be busy during the summer season. Skopelos Island is a place that embraces you with its peaceful atmosphere, natural beauties and the sincerity of local life. If your vacation plan is to spend a pleasant time away from the crowds, friendly with nature, against the sea, Skopelos may be just the place you dream of.
