How to get to Thassos

Thassos is one of the quiet but peaceful islands of the Aegean in the north of Greece. Even if the transportation is a bit more circuitous compared to other touristic islands, it is definitely not intimidating.  Since there is no airport on the island, direct transportation by plane is not possible. The nearest airport is Kavala International Airport on the mainland. If you want to go by plane, you should first go to Kavala, from there you can take a short land trip and then a ferry to Thassos. During the summer months, it is easy to reach Keramoti port from Kavala and ferries are frequent. Thassos tours departing from Istanbul, Çanakkale and Edirne are also very popular. These tours, which are usually organized by bus, are economical and ideal for those who do not want to deal with planning problems. Moreover, with a guided narration on the way, even the journey turns into a pleasant discovery. If you want to drive your own car, Ipsala Border Gate is the most common crossing point. A few basic documents are required to enter Greece by car: Green insurance, vehicle registration, international driver's license (or a new driver's license with a chip is sufficient). And don't forget the visa issue. Since Thassos is located in the Schengen area, a valid Schengen visa is a must.
