Halkidiki Guide

Halkidiki is a region in northern Greece, known for its three finger-shaped peninsulas, attracting both nature and culture enthusiasts. It is about 1-1.5 hours from Thessaloniki. With its sea, quiet bays, taverns, pine forests and friendly people, it is a place where you can find everything you are looking for in a vacation. Halkidiki is divided into three main peninsulas, Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos.

How to get to Halkidiki from Turkey?

The easiest way is to fly to Thessaloniki International Airport. There are usually direct flights from Istanbul. After landing at the airport, you can either rent a car or take a private transfer or bus to Halkidiki. If you plan to go with your own car, it is possible to reach Halkidiki in about 8-9 hours from Istanbul. But don't forget that you need a visa; Greece is in the Schengen zone.

Renting a car is especially advantageous for more natural places with limited transportation such as Sithonia.
Buses and transfers are more sufficient in more developed, touristy areas such as Kassandra.

Halkidiki Beaches

Kavourotrypes (Sithonia): Rocks and turquoise water. Ideal for mask and snorkeling.
Kallithea Beach (Kassandra): Comfortable sun loungers, beach bars. Family friendly and lively.
Armenistis Beach (Sithonia): Entrance fee but very well maintained. There is also a camping area.
Vourvourou: More small bays and hidden corners to explore. It is possible to go to the islets by renting a canoe.

Where to eat in Halkidiki?

Greek cuisine, especially with its seafood and appetizers, is very familiar to us Turks, but still different. Everything is fresh, the portions are big and the atmosphere is cozy.

Aristos Fish Restaurant: A classic tavern by the sea. Sardines, scallops and Greek salad are great.
The Garden: Very peaceful with its garden. Octopus is a must try.
Sousourada: Set menus and wine pairings are successful.
Panos Tavern: Orzo with mussels is a favorite here. The portions are big, it makes sense to share.

Coffee & Dessert break:

Baboo Cafe: A colorful place overlooking the harbor.
Anchor Foodbar: For those who want to have breakfast by the sea.
Enigma Cafe: A quiet place to have a cup of coffee.

Practical Information

Visa: Schengen visa required. Expect a high volume of applications.
Currency: Euro.
Language: Greek, but English is common in tourist areas. They are used to Turkish tourists.
Prices: A bit high compared to Turkey, especially by the sea.
July and August: The busiest months. Late June or early September is more comfortable.
