Evia Guide

Most of us think of Santorini or Mykonos when we think of Greece, but if you are looking for more than just an island, Evia Island may surprise you. Far from the touristic crowds, it is an island where the local life is still alive and fascinating with its history. It is the second largest island in the Aegean Sea, but its biggest advantage is that it is still “undiscovered”. Everything in Evia is in its place, unpretentious but real.

How to get to Evia Island?

Although Evia is an island, it is connected to the mainland by a bridge. This makes it easily accessible by car.

By Car from Athens: By car you can reach Chalkida (the capital of the island) in about 1.5-2 hours.
By Bus: There are regular bus services from Liossion Bus Station in Athens.
By ferry: There are short ferries from Agia Marina to Styra or from Rafina to Marmari. A practical option for those arriving by car.
Note: If you are planning to go north, Edipsos can also be reached by ferry via Volos.

Where to stay in Evia?

There are many accommodation options in Evia, from hotels, hostels and chalets to boutique hotels. But the best is to stay in a small hotel overlooking the sea in a quiet town or in a stone house in olive trees.

Chalkida: If you want a more urban, bustling atmosphere.
Edipsos: Perfect for a spa and relaxation-oriented vacation.
Marmari & Karystos: For those seeking tranquility by the sea.
Kimi & Rovies: Local village atmosphere, nature and calm.

Things to see and do in Evia

Edipsos Thermal Waters: A destination for healing seekers for thousands of years. There are spa hotels, but the natural springs on the beach are also free and impressive.

Dimosari Canyon: For those who want to be alone with nature. A 10 km route with cool walking paths, waterfalls and bridges.

Ancient City of Eretria: With its ancient theater, mosaics and archaeological museum, this is a stop not to be missed by history buffs.

Karystos Castle (Castello Rosso): The ruins of the Venetian castle offer a magnificent view. It is great to go at sunset.

Marmari: Small fishing town. Ideal for dining by the sea and reading a book with the sound of the waves.

Hiliadou Beach: It's like the secret beach of the Greeks. A little difficult to reach but worth it. There is also a nudist section. Just alone with nature.

What to Eat in Evia?

The tables here are simple but delicious. Fresh seafood, olive oil dishes and local wines take center stage.

Roasting & goat cheese: You'll often find it in the villages.

Octopus stifado (octopus stew): Try it in fishermen's tavernas.

Local wines & ouzo: There are vineyards, especially around Karystos and Kimi.

Desserts: Orange cake, almond cookies.

Recommended Locations

  1. O Psaras (Karystos)
  2. Marmita (Chalkida)
  3. To Kapilio (Edipsos)

Note

  • When to go: May-June or September-October are the best. The sea is warm and there are no crowds.
  • It might be good to rent a car. Because public transportation is not common and many bays, hiking routes or villages require a car.
  • English is common. Local people are friendly and helpful.
  • ATMs are in city centers. In small towns sometimes cash may be needed.
  • Grocery stores may close at 14:00 noon. Plan especially in the countryside.
