Two Days in Ağva: Riverside Stays and a Weekend by the Fireplace

We pack a warm jumper, walking shoes and an unfinished book. This time Ağva is about a long breakfast beside the Göksu, a short afternoon walk and a few evening hours by the fireplace in our room.

In Istanbul’s Şile district, Ağva sits where the Göksu and Yeşilçay rivers reach the Black Sea. For an autumn or winter visit, the hotel becomes part of the itinerary: where we stay shapes how we spend the day. This route works with a Saturday arrival, one night and a Sunday return. Arriving on Friday evening gives the same plan two nights and more breathing space.

Compare stays on our Ağva destination and hotel page, or explore more widely with the Ağva travel guide.

Day one: Settle beside the river

Set off on Saturday with a lunchtime arrival in mind. Driving time from Istanbul depends on your starting point and traffic. If arriving before check-in, ask about luggage storage and restaurant access. Begin with a pause by the Göksu: staying a little longer at the table is a fitting start to the weekend.

Keep lunch light and rest after check-in. While daylight lasts, leave time for the garden, riverside coffee and a few pages of your book. Someone who wants a river view from the room may choose differently from someone spending most of the day outside. Ask separately about the view, seating and location of the fireplace.

Where to stay: Two addresses on the Göksu

Park Mandalin Hotel, 15+: A weekend between garden and river

Park Mandalin Hotel suits this route with its riverside garden and seating areas. Choose the room around the stay you want: options include a bungalow with a fireplace and hot tub, stone rooms, and a river-view corner room with a fireplace. Facilities are not identical across categories.

Consider it for a couple’s weekend with long breakfasts and time moving between room and garden. Guests must be aged 15 or over. Travellers with pets should clarify the conditions for garden-view rooms before booking.

Wineport Lodge: Put the fireplace room first

Wineport Lodge also stands on the Göksu. If indoor time is central to a winter weekend, look at the Superior room option with a fireplace and hot tub. Confirm the features of your actual room rather than relying on the phrase “hotel with a fireplace”.

The restaurant offers a way to spend the evening without seeking another address. When half-board packages are available, ask what they include and whether drinks are charged separately. Families should discuss the suitability of their chosen room directly.

A detail worth checking: Ask whether the fireplace is in your room or a shared area, whether it will be lit during your stay, and how firewood is provided. If you want the photographed room, have its name confirmed on your booking.

Evening: Make dinner part of the plan

As darkness arrives earlier, keep dinner close. A table at the hotel means walking back to your room afterwards. Both Park Mandalin and Wineport can be considered, with the day’s menu, service hours and package inclusions checked ahead.

If you would like to eat in the centre, leave the Yeşilçay waterfront for Sunday lunch. For fish, ask about that day’s options and prices before ordering. Our Ağva food guide helps compare addresses.

After dinner, the list grows shorter: a warm drink, a book and time by the fire. Returning to the room early belongs to this trip too.

Day two: A long breakfast, then a Yeşilçay walk

Keep Sunday morning relaxed. Check breakfast and check-out times the evening before and take your time at the table. Sit facing the river if the weather allows, or by an indoor window if it does not. Leave room for a second cup of tea.

After check-out, head into central Ağva and walk along Rıhtım Caddesi beside the Yeşilçay. The harbour and glimpses of the sea fit into the same outing, followed by a light lunch or coffee. The Göksu seen from hotel gardens and the Yeşilçay’s everyday waterfront give the two days different perspectives.

If the weather is clear, the ground suitable and daylight sufficient, add a brief scenic stop around Kilimli. On wet or windy days, leave coastal paths for another time. More time at the hotel or an indoor stop in town can complete the weekend just as well.

Before setting off

  • Check fireplaces and hot tubs by booked room category, not simply by hotel name.
  • Bring water-resistant shoes and layers; adapt coastal walks to the weather.
  • Confirm dinner reservations and seasonal restaurant hours.
  • Check child and pet policies for your specific room.
