Touching a Glassy Sea

After a morning walk, the sea of Chalki beckons. You go to Kania or Ftenagia beach. You don't need a sunbed, just sit on a stone and dangle your feet in the water. The sea is so clear that when you look into it you see the bottom and when you look at the bottom you see yourself. After the sea, take a breather in a shabby tavern on the beach: Local cheeses, fresh fish, olives, tomatoes and a glass of ouzo. With the sounds of “Yia mas!” (Cheers!) coming from the table next to you, you get into the rhythm of the island.

Tracing Time with Meseoniko Castle

In the afternoon it is good to walk into the island's past. On the way up the hill, abandoned stone houses silently tell the traces of time. When you reach the top, Meseoniko Castle and the endless Aegean blue are at your feet. At that moment, inner silence, nature and history merge. A wordless peace comes over you.

Silent Prayer at Agios Nikolaos Church

On the way back, we stop by the Church of Agios Nikolaos. With its whitewashed walls, pebble-stoned courtyard and elegant bell tower, it is mesmerizing. There is no talking inside, nor is there any need. Silence is deeper here than any prayer.

Sitting in the Harbor as the Sun Sets

As sunset approaches, one sits on one of the stone piers in the harbor. The sky becomes golden and the sea silver. You don't want to go anywhere. Because this is the greatest gift of Chalki: The state of being in the moment.

In the evening, the little shops by the harbor turn on their lights one by one. You go inside, you buy handmade soaps, tiny ceramics, maybe a small painting... It's not a souvenir, it's a memory.

Ending with the calm of the night

The day ends, maybe with an ice cream on the pier, maybe just sitting on a bench. What to do, what to do? Maybe the best thing is to do nothing. Because everything is already in its place here. One stops. One feels. Slow down. And perhaps for the first time, he gets closer to himself.
