Ayvalık’s Garden of Happiness: Gizemli Konak
Ayvalık always reminds me of the same thing: happiness is something simple, unpretentious, and unembellished. Historic Greek houses rising from cut stone, narrow cobblestone streets, bottles of olive oil lined up on window sills, centuries-old door knockers… every detail quietly tells a story. With its architecture, streets opening to the sea, and centuries-old olive groves, this town whispers how simple a good life can actually be. So what does Ayvalık mean to you?
With this very feeling, I head to Gizemli Konak, rising in the heart of Ayvalık’s historic texture.
Gizemli Konak stands in one of Ayvalık’s most beautiful old streets, just 50 meters from the seaside. In this hidden corner of Vehbibey Neighborhood, Ferhan Hanım and Menteş Bey have carefully restored a historic mansion and opened its doors to guests. The restored stone building is furnished in line with its original architecture, combined with modern amenities, yet it has never lost its soul. The moment you step inside, you feel both history and the warmth of a home surrounding you.
The rooms come in different standards and styles. Wooden parquet floors, long beds, air conditioning, flat-screen satellite TV, minibar, and private bathrooms welcome you in every room. Their newly added facilities also include garden-view rooms with balconies; the garden offers a completely different pleasure in the mornings. In the evenings, you can enjoy a drink in the elegant lounge with a fireplace and unwind as the day ends.
Breakfast is a traditional village-style spread, all organic. The olive oil served here has a completely unique taste! Served between 09:00–11:00, this breakfast easily becomes the best part of your day.
The courtyard is the kind of place where you could sit for days with a good book and a good coffee.
Ferhan Hanım and Menteş Bey offer a warm, heartfelt home-like atmosphere to guests from all around the world. With a recent Booking score of 9.7, this is a place for those seeking atmosphere—we definitely recommend considering it.
Gizemli Konak is right in the heart of Ayvalık. Ayazma Church, Saatli Mosque, and Taksiyarhis Church are very close. It’s within walking distance to get lost in the historic streets of Macaron Neighborhood. Cunda Island is about 15 minutes away by boat or car. Across the water, Lesbos Island is close enough to be seen with the naked eye.
