Birgi Trip in Two Days - Birgi Travel Guide

Birgi is a town in Ödemiş, home to historical buildings such as the Great Mosque and Çakırağa Mansion. It was added to the World Heritage Tentative List by UNESCO in 2012.
It is a very cute place with its beautiful houses in the alleys you will see when you go, with cute and talkative aunts sitting in front of the door. It is an ideal place to spend a good time and you will not regret it with both photography and historical houses.

Birgi, with its tombs, madrasas, mosques, stone mansions, and street fountains from the Aydınoğulları period, each with its own story, is like a sanctuary for those seeking nostalgia and tranquility. Located near Ödemiş in Izmir, Birgi Village is nestled among the cool and clean slopes of the legendary Bozdağ Mountains, surrounded by centuries-old walnut and chestnut trees, with its windows rising above high stone walls and traditional tiled roofs, making it a charming village that must be visited and seen.

When we talk about holidays, it should not only be about sun, sea, and sand. Cultural heritage must also be included, and after visiting Birgi Village, one realizes how many beautiful and historically rich places our country has. You'll feel like you're getting lost between village life and architecture. Especially under the protection of the ÇEKÜL Foundation, Birgi Village is one of the most beautiful villages in our country today.

Birgi Village attracts visitors with its crowded population during the summer and autumn months. Therefore, we recommend that you visit Birgi during these time periods. The village's history dates back to ancient civilizations. It was once captured by the Persians, then used by the Romans, Byzantines, Aydınoğulları, and Ottomans. While its population once reached around 7,000 to 8,000, nowadays it's around 3,000 to 4,000. It has always been a continuous settlement area. During the Turkish War of Independence, the village was burned and destroyed by the Greeks but is now trying to regain its former beauty. Unless you count this tragedy, Birgi Village has always been a charming village that has constantly preserved its beauty and remained popular. If you haven't seen it yet, hurry up.

Where to Eat in Birgi

This beautiful village, as its name suggests, is not a place with many large restaurants. Because it's a small settlement. Therefore, don't expect extensive options like in Izmir or Ödemiş. However, despite its limited facilities, it will undoubtedly offer you beautiful presentations. When you come to Birgi Village, be sure to try the treats made by local women from Birgi Village. Dried figs, especially, are very famous in Birgi Village, and you can buy them. As for venues, you can have a traditional breakfast in the garden of Elif Hanım's Mansion. Nar Danesi Restaurant stands out with its authentic atmosphere; you can also come here. When you hear the name Dost Ol Kebap, think of meat varieties and meatballs. It has been serving since 1940 and is one of the places that come to mind when it comes to Ödemiş Meatballs. Speaking of famous things in Birgi Village, you can also mention Figs, Peksimet (dried bread), and Bergama Cheese. You can also buy chestnuts and walnuts from here. If you're here towards autumn, it's the time for chestnut and walnut harvest. I also recommend trying Tokoğlu Bakeries, famous for their additive-free wheat bread. The Birgi table must be seen, and the meals must be enjoyed. Don't forget to have breakfast at @adakizkoyevi when you come to this village.
