Aegean province nominated as Europes leading cruise destination

Turkey's western province of İzmir has been nominated for the World Travel Awards' Europe's Leading Cruise Destination Award.
Ekrem Demirtaş, president of the executive board of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce, said the World Travel Awards were internationally considered as the Oscars of tourism.
"The jury includes leading names from leading travel agencies. The other nominees in this category are Amsterdam, Netherlands; Athens, Greece; Cannes, France; Copenhagen, Denmark; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Lisbon, Portugal; Oslo, Norway; Reykjavik, Iceland; St. Petersburg, Russia; Stockholm, Sweden; and Venice, Italy. Voting will continue till Aug. 5. We call on everyone to join the public vote at World Travel Award's Internet site: www.worldtravelawards.com/vote," he said.
"We have received 650,000 passengers in 2011. In 2010, we hosted 355,899 passengers in 141 cruises. Our target is to increase the number of passengers up to 1 million next year," he added.
